Synopsis

The performances presented by DPAC always involves the exploration of various elements.

Last year, “Spectrum” was very well received by the audience and once again this September over four nights, the Damansara Performing Arts Center (DPAC) will gather renown local musicians for another musical feast.

This time, the arrangement and presentation of the songs will be based on the interpretation of oriental classical and Western classic instruments, and the addition of musical instruments with strong Malaysian characteristics.

An Evening Of Jazz will be a fun-filled night of large and small ensemble jazz music brought to you by the Julian Chan Jazz Orchestra, in collaboration with the Damansara Performing Arts Centre.

The Julian Chan Jazz Orchestra (JCJO) is a newly formed community jazz orchestra by Malaysian saxophonist Julian Chan. It is originally formed for the purpose of developing a platform for musicians within the Klang Valley to play in a large jazz ensemble. In their debut performance, the orchestra (conducted and led by Julian Chan) will feature both upcoming young musicians in the scene and some of Malaysia’s most established musicians. Together, they will be performing various big band works, ranging from swinging classics of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Count Basie Orchestra, as well as modern latin jazz arrangements from Michael Mossman and several others.

The Julian Chan Quintet will present small group jazz works from various eras in jazz in the classic two-horns and rhythm section format. The Quintet will also feature two special guests – Malaysia’s godfather of jazz, Michael Veerapen on piano; as well as Malaysia’s real queen of jazz voice, Junji Delfino on vocals.

About the Artist

Julian Chan

Julian Chan is a freelance saxophonist/flutist. He graduated with a master degree in jazz Performance from Queens College in NYC, where he studied with jazz greats Antonio Hart, Michael Mossman, Prof. Howard Brofsky and David Berkman. Julian has been actively performing, since 2001, in Malaysia and other parts of the Asian region, from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan and China. He has played with various jazz luminaries and established himself well in the Malaysian music scene, as a sideman and as a bandleader.

Michael Veerapan

His name is synonymous with Malaysian Music, particularly in the field of Jazz where he is widely acknowledged to be the driving force behind the Jazz Scene in Malaysia.  His career began even before graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music with Summa Cum Laude in 1982, where he had already made a name for himself as an up and coming pianist having worked with some of the more popular bands like Windjammer, the Delta Band and the legendary Jazz Fusion band Vintage who were at the forefront of the band era in the late 70’s. He was also the prime mover behind Malaysia’s first Jazz Rock concert in 1978, which brought about a tremendous interest in Jazz especially amongst younger audiences and thereby planting the seeds for the way Jazz is loved in his country.

Junji Delfino

Junji Delfino is deeply ensconced in the Malaysian jazz and performing arts circles. Born into a family whose names are synonymous with music in the Philippines, Ms Delfino, developing a passion for jazz at a very young age, has since evolved into a jazz vocalist of commendable stature, developing a sound and a style all her own.

A gifted songwriter, lyricist & composer, Ms Delfino has stamped her mark not just in the world of music but also made a name for herself in the local theatre scene. To date, she has two album credits to her name, with the latest, her first solo album HERE I AM, receiving rave reviews in both the local press and the internationally renowned & respected portal of all things jazz, allaboutjazz.com. The album launch coincided with her maiden concert, carrying the same title, in 2010.
